The Pooch: Enhancing Trick Dog Training Through Scenario-Based eLearning

Description:

Introduction: This concept project addresses the challenges faced by trick dog trainers in teaching new tricks to dogs. The goal is to empower trainers to troubleshoot and differentiate their instructional approaches when faced with dogs that may not be grasping the tricks as expected.

Audience: The primary audience for this scenario-based eLearning experience is trick dog trainers seeking to enhance their teaching methods and better understand the diverse learning needs of dogs.

Responsibilities: As the instructional designer and eLearning developer for this project, my responsibilities encompassed action mapping, storyboarding, visual design, and authoring. The tools employed included Articulate Storyline, Canva, Lucid, Word, and Snagit.

The Problem: Dog owners love teaching tricks, but trainers often face challenges when dogs don't respond as expected. The lack of diverse teaching strategies results in frustration for both trainers and dogs, hindering the achievement of trick dog titles.

The Solution: Through observation and analysis of training sessions, I identified a dual challenge of skill and knowledge among trainers. A scenario-based learning experience was developed to help trainers recognize ineffective methods and tailor instruction to meet the unique needs of each dog. This risk-free environment allows for practical skill development and promotes understanding of the consequences of instructional decisions.

Process: Following the ADDIE Model, I collaborated with a Subject Matter Expert (SME), a trick dog trainer, to analyze challenges in trick classes. Together, we defined training goals and formulated a solution. An action map guided the development of a text-based storyboard, and a visual mockup was created using Coolors and Canva. The interactive prototype was then developed and implemented in Articulate Storyline, undergoing thorough user testing for evaluation and refinement.

This project is a testament to the effective application of instructional design principles, leveraging technology to create an engaging and practical learning experience for trick dog trainers, ultimately improving the success rates of dogs achieving their trick dog titles.

Project Highlights:

  • Empowering Trainers Through Scenario-Based Learning: This project highlights the innovative use of scenario-based eLearning to empower trick dog trainers. By addressing the challenges in teaching new tricks, trainers are equipped with the tools to troubleshoot and adapt their instructional approaches to better meet the diverse learning needs of dogs and their handlers.

  • Comprehensive Design and Development Expertise: As the instructional designer and eLearning developer, the project showcases a holistic approach encompassing action mapping, storyboarding, visual design, and authoring. Utilizing a range of tools such as Articulate Storyline, Canva, Lucid, Word, and Snagit, the design process reflects a mastery of various elements crucial to creating an effective and engaging learning experience.

  • Strategic Problem-Solving with the ADDIE Model: The project's success is attributed to the strategic application of the ADDIE Model. Collaborating with a Subject Matter Expert, the project systematically analyzed challenges faced by trick dog trainers. The subsequent development process, from action mapping and storyboarding to interactive prototyping and user testing, showcases a methodical approach that ensures the program's effectiveness in addressing the identified issues and enhancing the success rates of dogs achieving trick dog titles.
